Parent guideThe Cambridge curriculum, explained.
The Cambridge curriculum is an international programme from Cambridge University Press & Assessment, used in schools around the world. It runs in four stages from age 5 to 19 and focuses on understanding, application and independent thinking.
The four stages
| Stage | Typical ages | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge Primary | 5–11 | English, mathematics, science and more, with clear learning objectives for each stage |
| Cambridge Lower Secondary | 11–14 | Deeper subject learning, building towards the upper secondary years |
| Cambridge Upper Secondary (IGCSE) | 14–16 | A wide choice of subjects, assessed through IGCSE examinations |
| Cambridge Advanced (AS & A Level) | 16–19 | Specialised subjects for university entry in India and abroad |
What makes it different
Cambridge sets clear learning objectives but leaves schools free to decide how to teach them. Children are expected to explain their reasoning, apply what they learn to new problems and write clearly, rather than reproduce memorised answers. English, mathematics and science form the core, and schools add languages, the arts, technology and physical education around them.
Does it suit Indian students?
Yes, for most children. Cambridge is used widely across India, and its qualifications are accepted by Indian universities. Families planning for Indian competitive exams such as JEE or NEET should plan for extra preparation in the senior years, or choose a CBSE pathway for those grades.
